If you are an active duty service member (ADSM) or family member, you generally choose between TRICARE Prime and TRICARE Prime Remote based entirely on **where you live and work**. If you are within a Prime Service Area (PSA) near a military base, you use Prime. If you are stationed in a remote location (usually more than 50 miles or an hour’s drive from a military hospital), you use Prime Remote.

## Bottom line * **Lowest cost:** It is a tie. Both plans feature $0 out-of-pocket costs for Active Duty Service Members and their families (Group A/B). * **Most flexibility:** **TRICARE Prime Remote.** It allows you to see local civilian providers because no military clinics are available. * **Best for families:** **TRICARE Prime**, provided you live near a military installation with robust pediatric and specialty care. * **Best for retirees:** **TRICARE Prime.** Retirees are generally ineligible for Prime Remote as they must live in a Prime Service Area to enroll in Prime.

When to choose each

### TRICARE Prime Choose this if you live in a **Prime Service Area (PSA)**. This is the "standard" HMO-style plan for the military. You will be assigned a Primary Care Manager (PCM), usually at a Military Treatment Facility (MTF). It is best for those who want the convenience of on-base services and have no out-of-pocket costs.

### TRICARE Prime Remote You don't usually "choose" this plan; it is assigned if your home and work addresses are more than 50 miles (or one hour's drive) from a military hospital. It is best for recruiters, ROTC instructors, or those on independent duty. It offers the same $0 cost structure as Prime but lets you use civilian doctors in the **TriWest** (West) or **Humana Military** (East) networks because no military facility is close enough to serve you.

## Switching between them You cannot switch between Prime and Prime Remote simply because you prefer one over the other; eligibility is determined by your zip code.

1. **Permanent Change of Station (PCS):** If you move from a remote area to a base, you must switch to Prime. If you move from a base to a remote area, you switch to Prime Remote. This is a Qualifying Life Event (QLE). 2. **Open Season:** During the annual fall Open Season, you can switch between Prime and Select, but your eligibility for "Remote" status remains tied to your geographic location. 3. **Process:** Contact your regional contractor (Humana Military in the East or TriWest Healthcare Alliance in the West) to update your address and enrollment.
