## Is it covered? Yes, TRICARE covers the diagnosis and treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Comprehensive coverage is provided through the basic TRICARE benefit for medical services and the specialized **Autism Care Demonstration (ACD)** for Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services.

## What TRICARE covers TRICARE’s coverage for autism is split between standard medical benefits and the Autism Care Demonstration (ACD), which is currently authorized to run through December 31, 2028.

### Medical and Behavioral Health Services Under the standard medical benefit, TRICARE covers: * **Diagnostic evaluations:** Assessments by specialized physicians (e.g., developmental pediatricians, child neurologists) to confirm an ASD diagnosis. * **Occupational Therapy (OT):** To improve daily living skills and sensory processing. * **Physical Therapy (PT):** To address motor skill delays. * **Speech Therapy:** To improve communication and social interaction. * **Psychological services:** Individual and family counseling to manage co-occurring conditions like anxiety or ADHD. * **Prescription medications:** Managed through Express Scripts for related symptoms.

### The Autism Care Demonstration (ACD) The ACD is the specific program that covers **Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)**. To participate, the beneficiary must: * Be diagnosed with ASD by an approved specialized provider. * Be enrolled in the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) if the sponsor is an active-duty service member. * Undergo periodic re-evaluations and outcome testing (e.g., Vineland-3, GARS-3) to measure progress.

**What is NOT covered:** * ABA services provided in a school setting that are "educational" in nature. * Unproven or "alternative" treatments (e.g., hyperbaric oxygen therapy, specialized diets, or chelation therapy). * Secretin infusions.

## Costs Costs for autism services depend on the sponsor's status (Active Duty vs. Retiree) and the specific TRICARE plan.

* **TRICARE Prime (Active Duty):** There are no out-of-pocket costs for ABA services or medical therapy provided by network providers. * **TRICARE Prime (Retirees):** For 2026, retirees generally pay a fixed copayment for specialty visits (typically $34–$40 per session) and ABA services. * **TRICARE Select (Active Duty):** For 2026, Group A beneficiaries pay a $21-$30 copay per visit; Group B (enrolled after 2018) may have different cost-shares until the deductible is met. * **TRICARE Select (Retirees):** A cost-share of 20-25% of the allowable charge or a fixed copay (approx. $50-$65) applies depending on whether the provider is in-network.

*Note: For ABA services under the ACD, there are specific "points of entry" and monthly cost-shares for some plans. Check with Humana Military (East) or TriWest (West) for the exact 2026 fee schedule.*

## Pre-authorization & referrals Strict authorization rules apply to autism services: * **Referral:** All beneficiaries must have a referral from a Primary Care Manager (PCM) or specialized physician for the initial diagnosis and for ABA services. * **Pre-authorization:** **Required for all ABA services.** You cannot start ABA therapy without an authorization from your regional contractor (Humana Military or TriWest). This authorization is typically granted for six-month increments. * **Outcome Testing:** Continued authorization for ABA is contingent upon completing required outcome measures (testing) every 6 to 12 months.

## Where to get care To find a provider, you must use your regional contractor’s directory. Because the West Region transitioned to **TriWest Healthcare Alliance** on January 1, 2025, ensure you are using the new TriWest portal if you live in the Western United States.

* **East Region:** Search the [Humana Military Provider Directory](https://www.humanamilitary.com). * **West Region:** Search the [TriWest Provider Directory](https://www.triwest.com). * **Overseas:** Contact [International SOS](https://www.tricare-overseas.com).

When searching, look for "Board Certified Behavior Analysts" (BCBAs) for ABA therapy or "Developmental Pediatricians" for diagnostic updates.
