## Is it covered? Yes, TRICARE covers the diagnosis and treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) as a medically necessary mental health condition. Coverage includes outpatient psychotherapy, inpatient psychiatric care, and evidence-based specialized treatments like EMDR or Prolonged Exposure therapy.
## What TRICARE covers TRICARE provides comprehensive mental health benefits for service members, retirees, and their families struggling with PTSD. Covered services include:
* **Psychotherapy:** Individual, family, and group therapy sessions are covered. * **Evidence-Based Therapies:** Specific clinical treatments for PTSD, such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Prolonged Exposure (PE) therapy. * **Inpatient Care:** Hospitalization for clinical stabilization or intensive psychiatric treatment. * **Residential Treatment Centers (RTC):** For children and adolescents requiring 24/7 care. * **Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP):** Intensive daytime treatment without overnight stays. * **Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP):** More rigorous than standard weekly therapy but less intensive than PHP. * **Medication Management:** Psychiatric evaluations and prescriptions (e.g., SSRIs) managed through the TRICARE pharmacy benefit. * **Telemental Health:** Remote therapy sessions via secure video conferencing.
**Exclusions:** TRICARE typically does not cover "alternative" or "experimental" treatments for PTSD unless they have gained DHA approval, such as certain equine therapies or unproven holistic treatments.
## Costs Costs for PTSD treatment depend on your beneficiary category (Group A vs. Group B) and your specific plan. The following are typical **2026 rates**:
* **TRICARE Prime:** * **Active Duty Service Members (ADSMs):** $0 for all covered care. * **Active Duty Family Members (ADFMs):** $0 for outpatient visits with network providers. * **Retirees:** Typically a small copayment (approx. $38–$40) for outpatient network visits. * **TRICARE Select:** * **ADFMs:** Network copays are approximately $15–$30 per visit. * **Retirees:** Network copays are approximately $35–$55 per visit. * **TRICARE For Life (TFL):** * As long as the provider is Medicare-certified and the service is covered by both Medicare and TRICARE, your out-of-pocket cost is typically $0.
*Note: If you see an out-of-network provider under TRICARE Select, you will be responsible for a higher percentage of the cost-share and a deductible.*
## Pre-authorization & referrals The rules for seeking PTSD care vary significantly by beneficiary status:
* **Active Duty Service Members:** **Referral Required.** ADSMs must always seek a referral from their Primary Care Manager (PCM) and typically require a prior authorization for all mental health care outside of a military clinic. * **Active Duty Family Members:** **No Referral Required** for most outpatient mental health care if using a network provider. However, **prior authorization is required** for intensive services like PHP, IOP, or residential treatment. * **Retirees/Others:** No referral is required for standard outpatient therapy sessions with network providers. Prior authorization is still required for inpatient or intensive outpatient programs.
## Where to get care How you find a provider depends on your geographic region:
* **East Region:** Contact **Humana Military** to find an in-network psychologist, psychiatrist, or licensed clinical social worker. * **West Region:** Contact **TriWest Healthcare Alliance** (the contractor as of Jan 1, 2025) to search their provider directory. * **Pharmacy:** For PTSD medications, use **Express Scripts** for home delivery or visit a military or retail network pharmacy. * **Crisis Support:** If you are in immediate danger, call or text **988** (the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) and press 1 for the Veterans Crisis Line.
