## Quick answer TRICARE covers acupuncture only when performed by a licensed physician (MD or DO) to treat chronic lower back pain. It is not covered as a standalone treatment for other conditions, nor is it covered when performed by a non-physician acupuncturist or a chiropractor.

Details

### Specific Coverage Criteria As of 2026, TRICARE's coverage for acupuncture is strictly limited under the "Acupuncture for Chronic Lower Back Pain" policy. To qualify for coverage, the following conditions must be met: * **The Diagnosis:** The treatment must be for chronic lower back pain lasting 12 weeks or longer. * **The Provider:** The service must be performed by a TRICARE-authorized physician (Medical Doctor or Doctor of Osteopathy) who is licensed to practice acupuncture. * **Excluded Providers:** TRICARE does not cover services from "Licensed Acupuncturists" (LAc) who are not also medical doctors. It also does not cover acupuncture performed by chiropractors or physical therapists.

### Costs and Copays (2026 Rates) If you meet the clinical criteria, your costs depend on your plan and the setting where you receive care. Because the treatment must be provided by a physician, it is billed as a specialty office visit.

* **TRICARE Prime:** Active duty service members (ADSMs) pay $0. Active duty family members (ADFMs) pay $0 with a referral. * **TRICARE Select (Group A):** Retirees and their families typically pay a copayment of $38 per visit (2026 rates). * **TRICARE Select (Group B):** Retirees typically pay a copayment of $35 per visit (2026 rates).

### Important Exclusions TRICARE explicitly excludes acupuncture for the following: * Pain management for any area other than the lower back (e.g., neck pain, migraines, or joint pain). * Treatment of nausea, addiction, or mental health conditions. * Treatments provided by "battlefield acupuncture" (BFA) specialists unless they are MDs/DOs and treating lower back pain.

### Regional Management * **East Region:** Managed by Humana Military. * **West Region:** Managed by TriWest Healthcare Alliance (as of the T-5 contract transition on Jan 1, 2025).

If you are enrolled in a Prime plan, you must obtain a referral from your Primary Care Manager (PCM) before seeking acupuncture treatment to avoid higher point-of-service charges.

## Who this affects * **Active Duty Service Members:** Covered with a PCM referral and MD/DO provider. * **Active Duty Family Members:** Covered with a PCM referral (Prime) or without (Select), provided the provider is an MD/DO. * **Retirees and Families:** Covered under TRICARE Select or Prime following standard physician office visit rules. * **National Guard & Reserve:** Covered under TRICARE Reserve Select (TRS) following Select-style cost-sharing.
