Details
### Breastfeeding Counseling TRICARE covers up to six outpatient breastfeeding counseling sessions per birth or adoption if the child is being breastfed. These sessions are usually provided by: * TRICARE-authorized providers (e.g., doctors, nurses, or physician assistants). * Certified Labor Doulas. * International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs). * Certified Lactation Counselors (CLCs).
These sessions are covered with **$0 out-of-pocket costs** (no copays or cost-shares) when you use a TRICARE-authorized provider. If you are in TRICARE Prime, you generally do not need a referral for these sessions as long as the provider is in-network.
### Breast Pump Coverage TRICARE covers one manual or standard electric breast pump per "birth event" (birth or adoption) for **$0 (2026 rates)**. * **Medical Necessity:** You must have a prescription from a TRICARE-authorized doctor, physician assistant, or nurse midwife. * **Heavy Duty Pumps:** Hospital-grade breast pumps are covered but only when a doctor provides a medical necessity letter (e.g., for a premature infant or a mother unable to breastfeed directly). * **Timing:** You can purchase the pump starting at the 27th week of pregnancy or up to three years after the birth event.
### Covered Supplies TRICARE covers the following supplies for up to 36 months after the birth event: * Standard power adapters. * Tubing and valves. * Bottles and bottle caps. * Storage bags (up to 90 per month). * Breast shields and splash protectors.
**Note:** TRICARE does not cover convenience items such as breast pump carry bags, cleaning supplies, or nursing bras.
### How to Get Your Pump 1. **Prescription:** Get a prescription from your provider. 2. **Purchase:** You can buy your pump from a medical supply provider (DME provider), a retail pharmacy, or an online retailer. 3. **Claims:** If you buy it at a retail store, you must pay upfront and file a claim for reimbursement. If using a DME provider like TriWest (West Region) or Humana Military (East Region), they may bill TRICARE directly.
