## Quick answer TRICARE only covers hearing aids for **Active Duty Service Members (ADSMs)** and their active duty family members who meet specific hearing loss criteria. Retirees and their families are generally **not eligible** for hearing aid coverage through TRICARE, though they may be able to purchase them through the VA or at a discount through the Retiree At-Home Hearing Aid Program (RAHHAP).
Details
TRICARE’s coverage for hearing aids is highly restrictive and based entirely on beneficiary status and the severity of hearing loss.
### Eligibility Criteria To qualify for coverage, the beneficiary must meet at least one of the following hearing thresholds (verified by an audiologist): * **Adults:** Hearing loss of at least 40 dB in the better ear (at 500, 1000, 1500, 2000, 3000, or 4000 Hz) OR hearing loss of at least 26 dB in three of these frequencies in one ear, AND speech recognition score less than 94%. * **Children:** Hearing loss of at least 26 dB in one ear at any of the frequencies listed above.
### Coverage by Plan and Status * **Active Duty Service Members:** Fully covered. ADSMs must generally receive hearing services at a Military Medical Treatment Facility (MTF) or have a referral from TriWest (West Region) or Humana Military (East Region). * **Active Duty Family Members (ADFMs):** Covered under TRICARE Prime or Select if they meet the hearing loss thresholds mentioned above. This includes the cost of the device, fitting, and initial batteries. * **Retirees and Family Members:** Not covered under TRICARE Prime or Select. However, retirees may be eligible to purchase hearing aids at government cost through the **Retiree At-Home Hearing Aid Program (RAHHAP)** at select military hospitals, or through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) if they have a service-connected disability. * **TRICARE For Life (TFL):** TRICARE For Life does not cover hearing aids because Medicare does not cover them. If you are a retiree on TFL, you are subject to the same exclusions as other retirees.
### Covered Services vs. Exclusions * **Covered:** Diagnostic hearing exams (if medically necessary), the hearing aid device itself (for eligible beneficiaries), and the initial fitting/adjustment. * **Not Covered:** Hearing aid batteries (except for the initial set), cleaning kits, or repair warranties for non-active duty members. TRICARE also does NOT cover "invisible" or high-end aesthetic upgrades unless medically necessary.
### 2026 Costs and Caps For those who are eligible (ADFMs), there is typically $0 out-of-pocket cost for the hearing aid itself when seen by a network provider with a valid referral. However, if an ADFM uses a non-network provider under the Point-of-Service (POS) option, they may be responsible for 50% of the allowed charge.
## Who this affects * **Active Duty Service Members:** Full coverage (priority at MTFs). * **Active Duty Family Members:** Covered if specific hearing loss thresholds are met. * **Retirees and Families:** Generally excluded from TRICARE coverage; redirected to VA or RAHHAP. * **National Guard and Reserve:** Covered if on active duty orders for more than 30 days (and their families). * **Survivors:** Treated similarly to the status of the sponsor at the time of death (Active Duty vs. Retiree rules apply).
