## Quick answer TRICARE covers hearing aids and related services only for active duty service members (ADSMs) and their immediate family members who meet specific hearing loss criteria. Retirees and their families are generally **not** eligible for hearing aid coverage through TRICARE, though they may have options through the VA or the Retiree At-Risk Program.
Details
TRICARE’s coverage for hearing aids is significantly more restrictive than its coverage for other medical devices. Eligibility depends primarily on the beneficiary's status and the severity of their hearing loss.
### Eligibility Criteria To qualify for coverage, the beneficiary must meet one of the following hearing loss thresholds: * **Adults:** Hearing threshold of 40 dB HL or greater in one or both ears (at 500, 1000, 1500, 2000, 3000, or 4000 Hz) OR a hearing threshold of 26 dB HL or greater in three or more of those frequencies in one or both ears. Additionally, speech recognition must be less than 94%. * **Children:** A hearing threshold of 26 dB HL or greater in one or both ears at any of the frequencies listed above.
### Coverage by Plan and Status * **Active Duty Service Members (ADSMs):** Fully covered. ADSMs usually receive hearing aids through military hospitals or clinics. If care is referred to a civilian provider, it must be authorized by the regional contractor (Humana Military in the East; TriWest Healthcare Alliance in the West). * **Active Duty Family Members (ADFMs):** Covered under TRICARE Prime or Select if the hearing loss criteria above are met. This includes the hearing aid device, fitting, adjustment, and cleaning. * **Retirees and Families:** TRICARE does **not** cover hearing aids for retirees, their families, or survivors. However, these groups may be eligible to purchase hearing aids at government rates through the **Retiree At-Risk Program** at certain military dental/medical clinics, or they may seek assistance through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
### 2026 Costs and Limitations * **ADSMs/ADFMs:** There is typically **$0 out-of-pocket cost** for the hearing aids themselves when using an authorized provider and meeting the medical necessity criteria. * **Exclusions:** TRICARE does not cover "invisible" or high-end aesthetic upgrades unless medically necessary. Batteries, except for those used in cochlear implants, are generally not covered for non-active duty patients.
### Related Services TRICARE covers diagnostic hearing exams if they are part of a physical exam or performed to diagnose a suspected medical condition. For 2026, TRICARE Prime beneficiaries pay $0 for these exams at a military MTF or with a referral. TRICARE Select beneficiaries may pay a copayment based on their sponsor’s initial enlistment date (Group A or Group B).
## Who this affects * **Active Duty Service Members:** Full coverage through MTFs or authorized civilian specialty care. * **Active Duty Family Members:** Covered if they meet the specific decibel loss thresholds. * **TRICARE Reserve Select (TRS) Members:** Covered under the same rules as Active Duty Family Members. * **Retirees:** Generally **excluded** from TRICARE hearing aid coverage; must use VA or Retiree At-Risk programs.
