## Quick answer **TRICARE Prime Overseas** is a managed care option for Active Duty Service Members (ADSMs) and their command-sponsored family members living in foreign locations. It offers the same comprehensive health benefits as TRICARE Prime in the U.S., typically with zero out-of-pocket costs, provided care is coordinated through a Military Hospital or Clinic and the International SOS portal.

Details

TRICARE Prime Overseas (and its companion plan for those in remote areas, TRICARE Prime Remote Overseas) is designed to provide high-quality healthcare to those stationed outside the United States. In the overseas regions, **International SOS** serves as the primary contractor.

### Enrollment and Eligibility To enroll, family members must be **command-sponsored**. This means the military member's orders must officially authorize the family to reside in the overseas location. If family members are not command-sponsored, they are generally not eligible for Prime Overseas and must use TRICARE Select Overseas.

### Costs (2026 Rates) * **Active Duty Service Members:** $0 enrollment fees; $0 out-of-pocket for all covered medical care. * **Active Duty Family Members:** $0 enrollment fees; $0 copayments for care provided at military facilities or authorized civilian providers (with a referral). * **Retirees:** Unlike the stateside Prime program, retirees and their families are **not** eligible for TRICARE Prime Overseas. They must use TRICARE Select Overseas.

### Choosing a Primary Care Manager (PCM) In "Prime" locations—areas near a military installation—your PCM will be a military provider at a Military Hospital or Clinic (MTF). You must go to your PCM for all routine care and obtain a referral for any specialty care.

### TRICARE Prime Remote Overseas If you are stationed in a location where a Military Hospital or Clinic is not available, you will use **TRICARE Prime Remote Overseas**. * You will be assigned a PCM (or you may select one from the International SOS network). * You still require a referral and pre-authorization for specialty care. * Point-of-Service (POS) charges may apply if you seek care without a referral.

### Important 2026 Requirements As of 2026, all Prime Overseas beneficiaries must ensure they are registered in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) with their correct overseas address. Failure to update DEERS can lead to claims being denied or being automatically moved to TRICARE Select.

## Who this affects * **Active Duty Service Members (ADSMs):** Mandatory enrollment when stationed overseas. * **Command-Sponsored Family Members:** Eligible to enroll in Prime or Prime Remote Overseas. * **National Guard and Reserve:** Only eligible when on active duty orders for more than 30 consecutive days and stationed overseas. * **Survivors:** Active duty survivors may remain eligible for Prime Overseas for a specific period depending on their status.
