## Definition TRICARE covers emergency and medically necessary non-emergency ambulance transportation to the nearest appropriate medical facility via ground or air.
## What it means in practice If you experience a medical emergency, TRICARE covers ambulance transport to the closest hospital equipped to provide the necessary care. You do not need prior authorization for an emergency ambulance ride. However, the service must be "medically necessary"—meaning your condition required immediate medical intervention or transport in a vehicle equipped for life support that a standard car or taxi could not provide.
For non-emergency situations, TRICARE only covers ambulance services if they are ordered by a physician and the patient’s medical condition precludes any other form of transport (such as a patient who is bed-confined or requires oxygen during transit). These often require prior authorization from your regional contractor (Humana Military in the East or TriWest in the West).
**Cost Shares and Examples (2026 Rates)**
* **TRICARE Prime:** Active duty service members (ADSMs) have $0 copays for all ordered or emergency ambulance services. For retirees and their families, the 2026 copay for emergency ground transport is typically around $50–$60 per occurrence, provided the provider is in-network. * **TRICARE Select:** Group A retirees generally pay a fixed copay (approximately $100–$120 in 2026) for ground ambulance services, while Group B beneficiaries may pay a percentage of the allowable charge (typically 20%) after meeting their deductible. * **Air Ambulances:** These are significantly more expensive and are only covered when ground transport is impossible or would pose a threat to the patient's life. If you use an air ambulance for a non-emergency without authorization, you may be responsible for the full bill.
Note that TRICARE does not cover "ambulatory" transport, such as "medicabs" or "van shifts," where the patient simply needs a ride but does not require medical monitoring during the trip.
## Related terms * **Emergency Care:** Treatment for a condition that a "prudent layperson" would believe threatens life, limb, sight, or cause undue suffering. * **Medically Necessary:** Health care services or supplies needed to diagnose or treat an illness, injury, condition, or its symptoms and that meet accepted standards of medicine. * **Allowable Charge:** The maximum amount TRICARE will pay for a covered health care service. * **Prior Authorization:** A requirement that your doctor gets approval from TRICARE before providing certain non-emergency services. * **Point of Service (POS) Option:** An option for Prime enrollees to see non-network providers at a higher cost without a referral.
