## Definition A host nation provider is a medical professional or facility located outside the United States that is authorized to provide care to TRICARE beneficiaries living or traveling overseas.

## What it means in practice If you are stationed or traveling in a foreign country (the "host nation"), a host nation provider is your equivalent of a civilian doctor or hospital. These providers are not part of the U.S. military treatment facility (MTF) system but have been vetted or "certified" to provide care to the military community. Under the T-O-S (TRICARE Overseas Program) contract managed by International SOS, these providers are categorized as either "contracted" or "non-network/non-contracted."

For TRICARE Overseas Program (TOP) Prime and Prime Remote enrollees—typically Active Duty Service Members (ADSMs) and their families—host nation providers are the primary source of care when an MTF is unavailable. In most cases, if you have a referral, International SOS will coordinate payment directly with the host nation provider. This means you should not have to pay up-front for covered services, and your out-of-pocket costs are typically $0 (2026 rates).

If you are using TRICARE Select Overseas, or if you are a Prime enrollee traveling in a host nation without a referral for non-emergency care, the experience is different. You may be required to pay the host nation provider in full at the time of service in the local currency. You must then translate the bill into English and submit a claim to International SOS for reimbursement. For TRICARE Select users, your 2026 cost-shares and deductibles will apply based on your sponsor's status (Group A or Group B). Be aware that non-contracted host nation providers may charge more than the TRICARE allowable charge, leaving you responsible for the "balance billing" amount.
