## Definition Inpatient care refers to medical treatment that requires you to be formally admitted to a hospital or other healthcare facility for at least one night.

## What it means in practice For TRICARE beneficiaries, "inpatient" status begins the moment a doctor writes an order for formal admission. This is a critical distinction because your out-of-pocket costs are often calculated differently than they are for outpatient services. Common examples of inpatient care include recovering from major surgery, receiving intensive treatment for a serious illness, or being admitted for childbirth.

The amount you pay for inpatient care depends on your beneficiary category (Group A vs. Group B) and your TRICARE plan (Select, Prime, or For Life). For example, under **TRICARE Prime**, active duty service members (ADSMs) have $0 out-of-pocket costs for inpatient stays. For retirees on TRICARE Prime, there is typically a small per-diem charge or a flat admission fee (e.g., approximately $160 per admission in 2026 for some groups).

If you use **TRICARE Select**, you generally pay a cost-share. This might be a fixed daily rate at a network hospital or a percentage of the total allowable charge (often 20% to 25% after your deductible is met). It is important to note that "observation status"—where you stay in a hospital bed overnight so doctors can monitor you—is often billed as **outpatient** care, which can result in different copayments than a formal inpatient admission.

In the TRICARE West Region (managed by TriWest) and the East Region (managed by Humana Military), most non-emergency inpatient admissions require **prior authorization**. If you are admitted through an emergency room, the facility must notify your regional contractor within 24–48 hours to ensure the stay is covered as an inpatient service.

## Related terms * **Outpatient:** Medical procedures or tests that can be done in a medical center without an overnight stay. * **Prior Authorization:** A formal decision by TRICARE that a health care service or inpatient stay is medically necessary. * **Cost-Share:** The percentage of the total cost of a covered health care service you pay after you’ve paid your deductible. * **Catastrophic Cap:** The maximum amount you will pay out-of-pocket for covered TRICARE services each calendar year. * **Observation Status:** A specific outpatient status where you stay in the hospital while a doctor decides whether to admit you as an inpatient or discharge you.
