## Definition MHS GENESIS is the Department of Defense’s modern electronic health record (EHR) system that integrates inpatient and outpatient health records across all military hospitals and clinics worldwide.
## What it means in practice For a TRICARE beneficiary, MHS GENESIS is the "digital spine" of your healthcare journey. It replaced older legacy systems like ALTHA and CHCS to ensure that your medical records follow you seamlessly during Permanent Change of Station (PCS) moves or deployments. Whether you are treated at a sprawling military medical center in the East Region (managed by Humana Military) or a small clinic in the West Region (managed by TriWest), your providers see the same real-time data regarding your allergies, prescriptions, and lab results.
The most visible part of this system for patients is the **MHS GENESIS Patient Portal**. This secure website replaced TRICARE Online (TOL). Through the portal, you can view your laboratory and radiology results, exchange secure messages with your primary care team, and schedule appointments at military hospitals or clinics. It also allows you to download your medical records to share with civilian "network" providers if you are using TRICARE Prime or TRICARE Select.
While there is no direct "fee" to use MHS GENESIS, its implementation has changed how beneficiaries interact with the pharmacy. Because the system is integrated with **Express Scripts**, your prescriptions are tracked more stringently to prevent drug interactions. If you are using MHS GENESIS to manage a prescription for a maintenance medication, you can often see the status of your refills at your local military pharmacy or request a transfer to the TRICARE Pharmacy Home Delivery service.
One critical point for 2026: If you are an app-based user, ensure you have an upgraded DS Logon, Common Access Card (CAC), or ID.me account. MHS GENESIS requires high-level security authentication. While the system is designed to be efficient, some beneficiaries may still experience "freeze" periods during system updates; during these times, military clinics may temporarily move to paper records, though this has become less frequent as the global rollout reached full maturity following the T-5 contract transition.
