## Definition Military OneSource is a Department of Defense-funded program that provides free, confidential non-medical counseling and comprehensive support services to service members and their families outside of the traditional TRICARE medical system.
## What it means in practice For a TRICARE beneficiary, Military OneSource acts as a "wraparound" service to their health insurance. While TRICARE covers clinical mental health treatments (such as therapy for diagnosed depression, PTSD, or substance abuse), Military OneSource handles "non-medical" issues. This includes short-term counseling for relationship stress, grief, deployment adjustments, and parenting challenges. Because these services are not processed as medical claims through Humana Military (East) or TriWest (West), they do not require a referral from a Primary Care Manager (PCM) and do not appear in the member's official military medical record.
In practice, a beneficiary can receive up to 12 free counseling sessions per person, per issue. If a counselor identifies a condition that requires clinical treatment or long-term medication, they will transition the member to the TRICARE network for formal medical care. Beyond counseling, the service provides practical support that TRICARE does not, such as tax preparation, financial coaching, relocation assistance, and spouse employment help.
All services provided by Military OneSource are $0 for eligible users (Active Duty, National Guard and Reserve, and their immediate family members). It serves as a vital resource for those who want to seek help early before a lifestyle stressor evolves into a medical condition that would require a TRICARE claim. Retirees and their families are eligible for up to 365 days after their separation or retirement date.
