## Definition The TRICARE Nurse Advice Line (NAL) is a free, 24/7 service that connects military beneficiaries with registered nurses who provide medical guidance, self-care advice, and assistance with urgent care referrals.

## What it means in practice The Nurse Advice Line serves as the first point of contact for TRICARE beneficiaries who are unsure if an injury or illness requires an emergency room visit, an urgent care appointment, or home care. Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the service is staffed by registered nurses who use standardized medical protocols to assess symptoms. For example, if a parent’s child develops a high fever at 2:00 AM, the nurse can advise whether to wait for a primary care appointment or head to the nearest ER.

For those enrolled in **TRICARE Prime** (including Prime Remote and Prime Overseas), the NAL is particularly critical for administrative reasons. In many cases, Prime beneficiaries require a referral for urgent care to avoid higher out-of-pocket point-of-service charges. The NAL can issue these "administrative referrals" to an urgent care center if the beneficiary's primary care manager (PCM) is unavailable. For **TRICARE Select** beneficiaries, the service remains a valuable logic-check for medical concerns, though they generally do not need referrals for urgent care visits.

There is **no cost** (2026 rates: $0 copay) to call or chat with the Nurse Advice Line. It is available to all TRICARE beneficiaries in the U.S. and at most overseas locations. In the United States, beneficiaries can reach the NAL at **1-800-TRICARE (874-2273), Option 1**.

If the nurse determines that follow-up care is needed, they can often help schedule an appointment at a Military Medical Treatment Facility (MTF) if the beneficiary is enrolled to one. If the MTF is closed or the beneficiary is traveling, the nurse will provide directions to the nearest network urgent care center or emergency room. This helps prevent unnecessary ER visits, which saves the Department of Defense money and saves the beneficiary the long wait times associated with emergency departments.
