## Definition A Permanent Change of Station (PCS) is the official relocation of an active duty service member—and often their family—from one duty station to another for a period of more than 20 weeks.

## What it means in practice For TRICARE beneficiaries, a PCS is a **Qualifying Life Event (QLE)**. This means you have a 90-day window from the date of your move to update your address in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) and change your TRICARE plan if necessary. Because TRICARE coverage is region-specific, moving from the East Region (managed by Humana Military) to the West Region (managed by TriWest Healthcare Alliance) requires a deliberate enrollment transfer to ensure you don't lose access to care or face out-of-network charges.

If you are enrolled in **TRICARE Prime**, you must coordinate with your current Primary Care Manager (PCM) for any urgent care during your travel and then enroll with a new PCM at your new location. You should not wait until you are sick to transfer your enrollment; doing so immediately upon arrival ensures that referrals for specialty care are processed correctly in your new region. If you are using **TRICARE Select**, your coverage is more portable, but you must still update your address to ensure your "Group" status and catastrophic caps are applied correctly based on your new location.

Financially, a PCS can impact your out-of-pocket costs if you move into or out of a remote area. For example, if you move to a location where a Military Treatment Facility (MTF) is unavailable, you may transition from TRICARE Prime to **TRICARE Prime Remote**. While active duty service members have $0 out-of-pocket costs (2026 rates), family members on TRICARE Select should be aware that their deductible and cost-shares remain consistent regardless of geography, provided they see TRICARE-authorized providers at the new station.

Finally, do not forget your prescriptions. Before your move, the Defense Health Agency recommends getting a 90-day supply of maintenance medications through **Express Scripts** or your current MTF. This provides a buffer while you establish care with a new doctor at your destination.
