## Definition A Qualifying Life Event (QLE) is a significant change in your life—such as getting married, having a baby, or retiring—that opens a 90-day window for you to start, stop, or change your TRICARE health plan coverage outside of the annual Open Season.

## What it means in practice Normally, TRICARE beneficiaries can only change their enrollment during the annual Open Season (which typically runs from mid-November to mid-December). However, life doesn't always follow a calendar. A Qualifying Life Event acts as a "hall pass," allowing you to adjust your coverage when your family dynamic or geographic location changes. Common QLEs include marriage, divorce, the birth or adoption of a child, moving to a new zip code, or a sponsor’s retirement from active duty.

Once a QLE occurs, you have exactly **90 days** from the date of the event to log into the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) and update your information. After updating DEERS, you can then switch between TRICARE Prime and TRICARE Select, or add new family members to your existing plan. If you miss this 90-day window, you must generally wait until the next Open Season to make changes, unless you experience another QLE.

For example, if an Active Duty family moves from the East Region (managed by Humana Military) to the West Region (managed by TriWest Healthcare Alliance) in 2026, the move is a QLE. They must update their address in DEERS and then transfer their enrollment to the West Region. If a retiree on TRICARE Select has a baby in 2026, they must register the child in DEERS within 90 days; failure to do so means the child may only be covered for the first 60 days of life as a "deemed" beneficiary, after which the family would pay full out-of-pocket costs until the next enrollment period.

It is important to note that a QLE is not just about changing plans; it is often the only time you can enroll in a plan if you previously waived coverage. For 2026, the costs associated with your plan (enrollment fees or premiums) are determined by your "Group" status and the specific plan you choose during the QLE window.
