## Definition TDY stands for Temporary Duty, which refers to a service member’s assignment to a location away from their permanent duty station for a limited period, typically less than 180 days.

## What it means in practice When you are on TDY, your TRICARE coverage travels with you, but how you access care depends on your location, your specific plan, and the nature of the medical need. For most Active Duty Service Members (ADSMs) on TRICARE Prime, emergency care is always covered at the nearest emergency room. However, for non-emergency "urgent" care, rules are stricter. If you are TDY and need urgent care, you should contact your Primary Care Manager (PCM) or the Military Medical Support Office (MMSO) at the Defense Health Agency to ensure the visit is authorized and that you don't face out-of-pocket costs.

If you are TDY within the United States, you are still within the jurisdiction of either the East Region (Humana Military) or the West Region (TriWest Healthcare Alliance). If you cross regions—for example, traveling from Fort Liberty, NC (East) to a training exercise at Fort Irwin, CA (West)—your contractor changes temporarily. It is critical to notify your regional contractor or use the TRICARE Nurse Advice Line (1-800-TRICARE) before seeking care to avoid a "Point of Service" charge. For Prime beneficiaries, these charges in 2026 can be substantial, often involving a $300 deductible if care is sought without a referral.

For pharmacy needs while TDY, Express Scripts manages the benefit. You should bring enough maintenance medication to cover the duration of your trip. If you run out or lose your medication while TDY, you can use any TRICARE retail network pharmacy, though you may need a new prescription from a local provider or a temporary override from Express Scripts.

If your TDY is overseas (OCONUS), your care is managed by International SOS. ADSMs on TDY overseas must generally receive care at a military hospital or clinic if available; if not, they must coordinate with the TRICARE Area Office to ensure the civilian provider is vetted and that the government is billed directly.
