## Definition TRICARE Prime Remote (TPR) is a managed care option that provides health coverage for active duty service members and their families who live and work in designated remote locations, typically more than 50 miles or one hour's drive from a military hospital or clinic.

## What it means in practice If you are an active duty service member assigned to a recruiting station, ROTC unit, or other "geographically separated" duty station, you likely qualify for TPR. Under this plan, you receive the same comprehensive coverage as TRICARE Prime but without the requirement to seek care at a Military Medical Treatment Facility (MTF). Instead, you use a network of civilian providers managed by **Humana Military** (East Region) or **TriWest Healthcare Alliance** (West Region).

For the service member, TPR features $0 out-of-pocket costs for all covered medically necessary care. You are assigned a Primary Care Manager (PCM) in the civilian community. If a network provider isn't available within the access standards (usually 30 minutes for primary care), the regional contractor will assist you in finding a non-network provider. While you don't need referrals for primary care, you still require a referral from your PCM and authorization from your regional contractor for specialist visits.

Family members can also enroll in TRICARE Prime Remote for Active Duty Family Members (TPRADFM). Like the service member, family members generally pay $0 for covered services when using network providers. For the 2026 plan year, there are no enrollment fees for active duty families. However, if a family member uses the **Point-of-Service (POS)** option—meaning they see a doctor without a referral when one was required—they will face a deductible ($300 for individuals / $600 for families) and 50% cost-sharing for the remainder of the bill.

## Related terms * **Primary Care Manager (PCM):** The specific doctor or clinic responsible for providing routine care and coordinating referrals to specialists. * **Network Provider:** A civilian healthcare professional or facility that has a contract with Humana Military or TriWest to provide care at discounted rates. * **Referral:** A request from your PCM for you to see a specialist; most specialty care under TPR requires an approved referral. * **Point-of-Service (POS) Option:** An expensive choice for family members to see a non-network provider or a specialist without a referral, resulting in high out-of-pocket costs. * **Access Standards:** The distance and time limits (e.g., 30 minutes for primary care) used by TRICARE to determine if a location is considered "remote."
