## Definition The TRICARE West Region is the administrative health care territory covering the western half of the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii, managed by TriWest Healthcare Alliance.

## What it means in practice If you live in the West Region, TriWest Healthcare Alliance is your primary point of contact for everything related to your healthcare administration. This includes processing your enrollments, managing primary care manager (PCM) assignments for TRICARE Prime, and authorizing referrals for specialty care. While your actual medical care comes from Military Treatment Facilities (MTFs) or civilian "network" providers, TriWest operates the network and handles the backend paperwork.

As of the T-5 contract transition that occurred on January 1, 2025, the West Region expanded significantly. It now includes 26 states: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. If you move from a state like Virginia (East Region) to California (West Region), you must transfer your enrollment to TriWest to ensure your claims are paid correctly.

For beneficiaries, the "Region" determines which portal you log into to check claims or find a doctor. For example, a TRICARE Select retiree in the West Region in 2026 will generally pay their enrollment fees and catastrophic cap based on their group status, but all those payments are tracked through TriWest’s systems. If you are using a civilian provider in the West Region, you should always verify they are part of the "TriWest network" to ensure the lowest out-of-pocket costs (2026 copays vary by plan type and sponsor status).
