## Definition TRICARE weight management refers to the various health services, nutritional counseling, and surgical interventions covered by the military health system to help beneficiaries achieve a healthy body weight.

## What it means in practice For a TRICARE beneficiary, weight management is not a single "benefit" but a collection of covered medical services. TRICARE generally covers services that address the underlying medical causes of obesity or manage the health consequences of being overweight. This include physician visits for obesity screening, nutritional counseling from a registered dietitian, and medical services to manage related conditions like type 2 diabetes or hypertension.

Covered services typically include nutritional therapy if you have a documented medical condition (such as obesity, defined as a BMI over 30, or a BMI over 25 with an associated metabolic disease). For 2026, there is no out-of-pocket cost for these preventive screenings if you are using a network provider under TRICARE Prime or TRICARE Select. However, TRICARE does not cover "lifestyle" programs like WeightWatchers, Jenny Craig, or over-the-counter weight-loss supplements and gym memberships.

Weight loss surgery (Bariatric Surgery) is covered for specific patients who meet strict clinical criteria. These criteria generally include being at least 18 years old (or having reached skeletal maturity), having a BMI of 40 or greater, or a BMI of 35-39.9 with a significant high-risk comorbidity like life-threatening sleep apnea. For 2026, Retirees and their families on TRICARE Select may owe a deductible and a percentage of the allowed cost for these surgeries, while Prime active duty family members typically only pay a small copayment if seen in the network.

Prescription weight-loss medications (like Wegovy or Zepbound) may be covered via the TRICARE Pharmacy Program, managed by Express Scripts, but they usually require prior authorization. These medications must be prescribed by a doctor to treat a medical condition and are subject to 2026 pharmacy copayments: typically $16 for a 30-day supply of a formulary brand at a retail network pharmacy or $38 for a 90-day supply via home delivery.

## Related terms * **Bariatric Surgery:** Surgical procedures like gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy covered by TRICARE for beneficiaries meeting specific obesity criteria. * **Nutritional Counseling:** Sessions with a registered dietitian or nutritionist to manage a medical condition, covered when medically necessary. * **Prior Authorization:** A requirement to get approval from Humana Military (East) or TriWest (West) before certain treatments or medications are covered. * **Preventive Services:** Healthcare services such as screenings and check-ups intended to prevent illness, often provided with no out-of-pocket cost. * **Comorbidity:** A secondary medical condition (like hypertension) that exists alongside obesity and may qualify a patient for more intensive weight management benefits.
